If you’re feeling stressed, burnt out, anxious or stuck in fight‑or‑flight, Bio‑Tuning® is designed to meet your nervous system where it is and guide it gently toward greater balance.
If you’re new to sound therapy - or you’ve heard about Bio-Tuning® and wondered how it is different - this page is here to help.
Sound is one of the most powerful forces in the natural world. It can move matter, influence emotion and alter brain activity. Across centuries and cultures, sound has been used for healing, meditation and regulation. Modern neuroscience now confirms that sound can directly influence the nervous system and brainwave patterns.
However, not all sound therapies are the same.
Bio-Tuning® represents a neuroacoustic nervous system optimisation approach - a precise, measurable and personalised form of vibroacoustic sound therapy that works directly with the body’s Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
The aim is not to claim to treat or cure medical conditions, but to support nervous system balance (homeostasis), which underpins resilience, emotional regulation, sleep quality and stress response.
This FAQ answers the questions I’m most often asked - if you have a question that isn’t listed, you’re always welcome to contact me.
Warmly,
EdwinaUK Bio-Tuning® Ambassador and PractitionerSound Therapy North East
What Is Bio-Tuning® and How Is It Different From Other Sound Therapies?
Bio-Tuning® is a precision, personalised approach to nervous system regulation, designed to reduce stress.
The process identifies your Fundamental Frequency - the specific sound frequency at which your autonomic nervous system is completely balanced (homeostasis). This frequency is identified using real-time, medical‑grade Heart Rate Variability (HRV) monitoring. Homeostasis is a pre-requisite for healing to occur.
Once identified, your frequency and its harmonics and octaves are delivered through a NeuroWave sound table or chair alongside personalised headphone tones for full body and brain synchronisation.
Unlike traditional sound baths or relaxation‑based sound healing, Bio-Tuning®:
- Uses real‑time physiological feedback
- Is personalised to your nervous system
- Combines physical vibration, brainwave entrainment and psychoacoustic sound design
- Works directly with stress physiology rather than general relaxation
In short:Traditional sound baths offer immersive relaxation.Bio-Tuning® provides clinical‑grade, individual nervous system optimisation.
Is Bio-Tuning® Scientifically Backed?
Bio-Tuning® is informed by established principles in neuroscience.
During sessions, changes in autonomic nervous system activity are observed using ECG‑based, medical‑grade HRV monitoring, which provides the most reliable insight into sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) balance.
Techniques used within Bio-Tuning®, including binaural beats and brainwave entrainment, are recognised phenomena in neuroscience with a growing body of peer‑reviewed research.
What training and qualifications do you have?
I am a fully qualified Bio‑Tuning® Practitioner, trained and certified by The Center for Neuroacoustic Research (CNR) in California under Dr Jeffrey Thompson, a pioneer in neuroacoustic research and sound‑based nervous system balance.
Who Is Bio-Tuning® Most Suitable For?
Most clients come to Bio-Tuning® because they feel chronically stressed or dysregulated.
It may be particularly supportive if you experience:
- Ongoing stress or burnout
- Anxiety or nervous system overwhelm
- Difficulty relaxing or sleeping
- Sensory overload
- Feeling constantly “on edge”
- Emotional volatility or shutdown
However, Bio-Tuning® is not only for times of stress or imbalance. It is also highly suitable for people who are functioning well and want to function even better. Many clients use Bio-Tuning® as a way to optimise nervous system performance, support focus, memory and mental clarity and enhance their capacity to perform under pressure. This includes professionals in high-demand roles, creatives, leaders and elite or competitive athletes seeking a physiological edge through improved regulation and recovery.
I am a strong advocate of maintaining wellness rather than waiting for symptoms to appear. A well-regulated nervous system supports resilience, adaptability and efficient recovery - helping to reduce the likelihood of stress accumulating unnoticed over time. Bio-Tuning® can therefore be used as a preventative and performance-supportive tool, not only as a response when something feels “wrong”. By supporting the nervous system before symptoms arise, clients often feel more grounded, focused and capable in everyday life.
How Does the Nervous System Affect Health?
The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) regulates:
- Heart rate and blood pressure
- Digestion and gut function
- Sleep and circadian rhythm
- Hormonal balance
- Immune response
- Emotional regulation and stress recovery
When the ANS remains in prolonged sympathetic dominance (fight‑or‑flight), symptoms can appear even when medical tests show no clear pathology.
Supporting nervous system balance provides a stable physiological foundation from which recovery, adaptation and resilience are more accessible.
How will I know if it’s working?
Your nervous system is monitored using a medical‑grade Heart Rate Variability (HRV) monitor during sessions. This allows us to track nervous system responses in real time and observe measurable changes in regulation.
Alongside this data, many clients notice subjective changes such as improved sleep, greater emotional steadiness, or increased resilience to stress.
Results vary from person to person. When the nervous system has been imbalanced for a long time, one of the earliest changes is often a deep sense of safety or relaxation.
Improved sleep is one of the most common early indicators that the nervous system is beginning to regulate.
Bio‑Tuning® is not an instant fix. The nervous system changes through time, repetition, and consistency and responses depend on your starting point and overall condition.
What Happens During a Bio-Tuning® Session?
An initial session includes:
- A 90‑minute consultation
- Medical‑grade HRV assessment
- A sound sweep to find your personal frequency for nervous system balance
- Experience of this frequency on the NeuroWave sound table or chair
-Your first personalised sound track to take home to continue the benefits
Sessions are 1:1, private, bespoke and deeply restorative.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Bio-Tuning® is flexible and tailored - there is no fixed number of sessions.
For best results, many clients complete Phase One, consisting of nine personalised soundtracks including the following brainwave states; Delta, Theta, Alpha, Default Mode Network and Gamma.
This includes:
- One essential in‑person session to identify your balancing frequency
- Additional in‑person sessions when moving to new tracks (recommended but optional)
- Daily listening at home using your personalised 30‑minute soundtrack
Each track is typically used for around two weeks, though this varies depending on individual response.
Certain conditions - such as pain or neurological tremor - often respond particularly well to sessions on the sound table or chair due to the vibration. In these cases, more in‑person sessions may be recommended.
Only the initial session must be done in person, as finding your precise frequency requires specialist equipment. The remainder of the programme can be completed at home using headphones, with excellent results.
Is Bio-Tuning® “One Session and Done”?
No. Bio-Tuning® works cumulatively.
The initial session often creates a noticeable shift, particularly for people who have been stuck in fight‑or‑flight for a long time. This alone is significant and can feel like a nervous system “reset”.
However, nervous system balance is a trained physiological function. Lasting change comes from consistent repetition over time, much like physical conditioning – going to the gym once will not build muscle.
For Phase One (9 different soundtracks), I typically recommend committing to around six months of daily listening, after which many clients use their tracks as ongoing support during periods of stress to support.
Your personalised soundtracks are yours for life - a long‑term resource rather than a short‑term intervention.
Are There Side Effects or Contraindications?
Side effects are uncommon and usually mild, such as temporary fatigue, emotional release or vivid dreams.
Contraindications include:
- Epilepsy
- Pregnancy
- Severe psychiatric or cardiovascular conditions
- Implanted medical devices (case‑by‑case)
- Ear conditions (including tinnitus or hearing loss) do not automatically exclude participation but should be discussed beforehand.
If unsure, please discuss before booking.
What Are Binaural Beats - and Why YouTube Is Different
Binaural beats occur when two slightly different tones are played to each ear. The brain processes the difference and generates an internal perceived frequency, influencing brainwave activity.
In Bio-Tuning®, binaural beats are used precisely and deliberately, based on how your nervous system responds - not as generic background audio.
Generic YouTube frequency tracks: - Are not personalised - Are heavily compressed, degrading audio precision - Provide no monitoring or safeguards.
Caution is advised when using random frequency content from the internet. Bio-Tuning® applies binaural beats within a structured, measured clinical framework.
What Are The Costs?
· Initial session: £150
· Follow‑up in‑person sessions: £75
· Personalised soundtracks (remote): £55 each
